The nation's first Smart Freight Corridor on State Highway 130 in Texas.

Nation’s First Smart Freight Corridor

The Smart Freight Corridor is planned to cover a 21-mile segment of State Highway 130 (SH 130) in the greater Austin area and will be designed to advance the future of freight mobility. In November 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) selected Cavnue to develop this corridor, marking a significant step toward integrating connected and automated trucking into Texas’ transportation network.

The project began with a four-mile initial deployment in November 2024, serving as a proof of concept to evaluate smart road capabilities and inform future expansions. Stretching from Georgetown to Mustang Ridge, this corridor has the potential to expand across key interstate routes, including I-10, I-35, and I-45, strengthening freight movement within the Texas Triangle.

Technology

The SH 130 Smart Freight Corridor will be equipped with advanced infrastructure, including sensors, cameras, radar, and wireless communication systems. These technologies create a comprehensive digital model of the roadway, providing real-time data on traffic flow, road conditions, and potential hazards. This information will be shared with connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) and TxDOT, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

Benefits

By leveraging Cavnue’s technology, the SH 130 Smart Freight Corridor will alert trucks to hazards like debris or stalled vehicles, enabling safer navigation and fewer delays, cutting emissions. The roadway will also feed real-time incident data to TxDOT, streamlining maintenance, optimizing traffic management, and reducing downtime on SH 130. These advancements aim to boost freight efficiency and strengthen infrastructure oversight, enhancing safety and reliability for Texas’s trucking network.
